My big lesson from Big Island, Hawai'i 🌴
Two weeks ago, I discussed the importance of detoxing from social media.
Well - I tried it for myself.
Last week, I went on an 8-day trip with my wife to Big Island, Hawai’i:
During that trip, we:
- 🚌 Took a full-day bus tour across the island
- ☕ Went to several local coffee farms (100% Kona Coffee ROCKS)
- 🐟 Snorkeled and swam with 15-feet manta rays at night
- 📚 Read books in a 3k-foot elevation “Cloud Forest”
It was incredible.
And during those 8 days, I deleted all of the social media apps from my phone.
(No Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, Discord, or Slack.)
My realization?
I never needed them on my phone in the first place.
The space that was created with them gone, PLUS the amount of cool things to do, had me using my time in a way that was:
- 🤩 More fun
- 💪 More active
- ❤️ More fulfilling
So…
I’m going to aim to keep socials off of my phone.
If I absolutely have to use them for work (or occasional recreation), I’ll just re-download them, do what I need to do, and promptly re-delete them.
It doesn’t mean I’m going to stop using them altogether.
I’ll be responding to comments on my platforms and using these socials for work on my desktop computer.
But I want to get in the habit of introducing more space in my life by removing things that make it too easy to stay “plugged in”.
