🎹 The Ultimate Composition Practice Routine
Aug 21, 2023Mastery of composition (or any art) comes from 1000+ hours of quality practice. Implement these four strategies into your practice routine, and over time you'll see incredible results:
Early on in your studies, steal remorselessly.
Illustrators often go to museums to sketch famous artwork that moves them. Transcription and imitation allows you to put on a composer's gloves--to feel their musical language under your fingers and learn to speak their language.
Step 2: Amalgamate
As you grow in skill, learn to step away from direct imitation of any one composer. Instead, begin exploring how you can merge your disparate influences together.
Doing so challenges your creative brain, while still staying connected to the music you love and are inspired by.
With a solid grasp your craft, it's time to break the rules.
This is less about writing experimental music, and more about trusting your inner artistic voice above anyone else's. Let your instincts guide your art, and challenge yourself to solve artistic problems in new ways.
Step 4: Educate
It's time to bring it full circle and pass your knowledge down.
Teaching others is one of the best ways to codify your knowledge and experience, and create lasting impact beyond your art. Everyone has something they can teach someone else; learn to share the things that inspire you with others.
