🎻 How to Learn Orchestration in a DAW
Oct 17, 2023A few weeks back, my buddy Mattia Chiappa released an important video for composers writing in DAWs.
I often get asked by students for recommendations on orchestration books or scores to study. While I did read lots of music books, in truth, that’s not where I improved.
My improvements happened mostly by tons of active listening to music I loved, isolating sections that caught my ear, and doing my best impression/imitation of that spot.
And Mattia’s process seems to be exactly the same.
The truth is that the best way to learn composition, orchestration, or arranging is simply to do more of it.
Books can be a useful tool of reference for when you’re stuck, but will never replace the growth that comes with hashing it out via your composition method of choice.
