๐ŸŒฑ The Secret to Growing an Online Audience

Jun 27, 2023

In a recent interview with Canvas Rebel, I was asked how I built my audience on social media.

Whether you’re into social media or not, finding success as a professional creator is about one thing:

Providing VALUE.

That might seem obvious...

But we often we confuse OUR wants and needs with the wants/needs of our audience.

We think to ourselves:

  • “I want more people to listen to my music.”
  • “I want to get a job composing for animation.”
  • “I want to have more subscribers on YouTube.”

But to meet those goals, we need the support of others.

And they're most likely to offer help when we're helping THEM.

In my ๐ŸŽฌ Composing Career Bootcamp, we break down the five categories of value that are most frequently delivered through content:

  1. Inspiration ๐Ÿ’กโ€‹
โ€‹Ex. Share how you overcame a struggle
  2. Entertainment ๐Ÿคฃ
    โ€‹
Ex. Post a blooper reel or mistake you made when recording
  3. Education ๐ŸŽ“
    โ€‹
Ex. Teach people something you learned recently
  4. Community ๐Ÿค
    โ€‹
Ex. Encourage your audience to share things with you
  5. Luxury ๐Ÿ’Ž
    โ€‹
Ex. Offer people something that makes them feel special

Keep in mind:

You don’t have to provide ALL these things.

(But you should certainly aim for at least one.)

For example, on my YouTube channel, I aim to inspire and educate composers.

As a result...

Many of my viewers feel like they’re getting more than they’re giving.

And when they feel that way, they can’t help but thank me somehow - sending me a tip, buying a course, or commissioning my services.

This is known as the law of reciprocity.

So next time you think:

"What do I WANT?"

Try shifting your mindset to:

"What can I GIVE?"
