😬 Escape Composer's Block
Aug 21, 2023If you want to compose for a living, you'll have to learn how to push through creative blocks.
Here's 6 tactics for when you're feeling stuck, and how to get back to creating quickly:
Establish a Routine
Don't wait to feel "inspired". Try working at the same time each day to help discipline your mind to be creative on command. Our brains rewire to accommodate recurring routines, so you'll get into the creative mindset quicker by aiming for consistency.
Shorten Your Deadline
Procrastination happens when we feel underwhelmed just as much as when we feel overwhelmed. If you're feeling stuck, try giving yourself less time to finish. Urgency will force you to make decisions faster, and help you finish instead of perfecting.
No Distractions
Every time we change tasks, there is a "switching cost": our focus. Turn off your WiFi, close your doors, shut the blinds, and put the phone in another room. Allow nothing to disturb you while you create, so you can maintain flow state.
Set Creative Restrictions
Challenges spark creativity. Try setting a limitation on your work to inspire new ideas and problem-solving. Examples include only writing a piece with minor chords, using woodwinds instead of strings, or writing an action cue without percussion.
Create Accountability
Our goals live in front of us to pull us forward, but fears live behind us to push us from the back. Tell other people about what you're creating and when you'll be finished. The social consequence of not meeting that goal can serve as a powerful motivator to help you stay on track.
Take a Break
Sometimes you just need some time away from your work. Go for a walk, hit the gym, take a shower, and breathe. Allow yourself to recharge and forget (for a while). Note how your refreshed mind is able to see problems more clearly and generate creative solutions.
