✈️ Do Film Composers Need to Live in LA?
Aug 21, 2023In 2019, I moved to LA to continue pursuing a composing career.
6 months later, COVID hit the US, sending us into a nationwide lockdown.
Quarantine forced me to be creative with finding new opportunities.
I replaced in-person networking with forums/Zoom calls.
I made educational videos on YouTube instead of sending job applications.
I made an e-book, launched a podcast, and created a webstore.
Most of the things I tried didn't work.
But in 2021, I began to see the results of my effort.
Animators started hiring me after finding my YouTube videos. Composers I met on forums invited me onto new projects. Students began booking lessons and purchasing products.
Today, I'm a full-time composer and content creator.
I have clients from around the world, with recurring work from companies in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
70% of the people who hire me find me online. 95% of the clients I meet and chat with are done virtually. And 100% of the work I do is from the comfort of my home studio.
Now...
I still get client work from people I know here in LA, and am grateful for the relationships and community that exists here.
But what matters MORE than where you live is what you give.
Whether it's LA, New York, or anywhere else in the world...
Live somewhere that enables you to be your most authentic, passionate, and generous self.
