ποΈ Composing Careers Need Practice, Too
Nov 21, 2023If you’re trying to make composing a full-time profession, your practice routine needs to change.
Think of it like exercise. πͺ
The left side of your body is your craft...
- πΉ Composing
- π» Orchestrating
- ποΈ Mockups
- π¬ Scoring
... and the right side of your body is your business:
- β Networking
- π£ Marketing
- π‘ Pitching
- π€ Negotiation
- π¨οΈ Communication
- π Project Management
Most composers tend to focus on the left side only, spending their practice time on their craft.
But to build strength in your career, you need to strengthen both sides of your body.
So what stops us?
π¨ “I’m not ready.”
I've coached hundreds of students over the years, and here's the most common objection I hear:
"My music isn't good enough to start looking for work."
Here's why I don't agree. β
When I started looking for composing work, I was 14 years old.
Here's what my music sounded like:
Does this sound “professional” to you?
It wasn’t good enough to get paid for, and it’s definitely not good enough for the kind of projects I work on now.
But I still looked for ways to find work anyway. β
I reached out to directors, animators, composers, and mentors every week.
I posted my work online constantly.
And I treated myself like I was already part of the media composing industry instead of waiting to feel "good enough" to join in.
But it didn’t happen overnight.
π’ Results Take Time
It took a lot of trial and error to figure out what worked and what didn’t.
I spent over a decade trying to figure out how to make a career making music.
The first few gigs I got were student films, paying between $0-$200 per score.
Those gigs gave me real-world experience. And those experiences led to more connections, a work portfolio, and better music.
My YouTube channel began to attract attention, and soon clients were reaching out to me (instead of the other way around).
The network I’d built began paying off, and composers began offering me overflow from projects they were too busy to handle.
After 10+ years of hard work, as of 2021 I’m so proud to say that I’m a full-time composer.
I absolutely love what I do. β€οΈ
In fact, I now have more opportunities than I can handle, and could continue to say yes to more work.
But I’m equally passionate about teaching, and want to give composers the tools I wish I had when I was starting.
I made the Composing Career Bootcamp to teach you how to compose for a living, too.
π The Bootcamp
Over my 6-week program, I'm sharing the exact framework I used to:
- β Build my network
- π² Market myself online
- π Find and initiate work oppotunities
- π¨οΈ Negotiate deals
- π Manage projects and deliver professionally
These are the skills I practiced every day for years to transform my hobby into a profession.
